Little Lungs, Big Futures- MA 1000 Air Purifier Information

Thank you for helping create healthier indoor air for children and staff!

Through a generous donation from Medify Air, with shipping support from UPS Foundation, and College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving®, your facility has received an MA-1000 HEPA air purifier and replacement filters at no cost.

At Children’s Environmental Health Network’s (CEHN) Eco-Healthy Child Care® (EHCC) program, we help early care and education providers make child care spaces safer and healthier by reducing exposures to common environmental health hazards.

Through the Little Lungs, Big Futures project, EHCC works with community partners and early child care programs to monitor and improve indoor air quality. HEPA air purifiers are used to reduce airborne pollutants. Participating providers have shown leadership in protecting children’s environmental health. This work inspired Medify Air, UPS Foundation, and College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving® to join us in supporting healthier air for children.

In 2026, Medify Air donated 175 air purifiers, with nine replacement filter sets each, to child care providers and other community groups working with children across 47 locations. UPS Foundation and College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving® generously donated the transportation and shipping of these purifiers from Tamarac, FL, to providers across the United States.

On behalf of EHCC, we thank Medify Air, UPS Foundation, and College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving® for making this donation possible. We also thank our Environmental Justice partner organizations for coordinating local distribution, and to the child care providers who are participating in the Little Lungs Big Futures initiative for helping to create healthier environments for children. This coordinated effort has brought cleaner indoor air to more children, educators, and communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are responses to questions you may have about your purifier. If you have a question that is unanswered from the responses below, please reach out to 202-543-4033.

To learn more about your unit, download the MA-1000 manual.

What type of air purifier do I have?

You received a Medify Air’s MA-1000 purifier. The MA-1000 is a portable air purifier designed for large indoor spaces and contains four True HEPA H14 filters. The filters reduce airborne particles such as dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and particles in smoke. The unit is also equipped with wheels, making it easier to move when needed.

How do I install the air purifier?

Follow these steps to install your unit:

  1. Make sure the purifier is on a steady and level surface and is vertical with the wheels on the floor.
  2. Unbox the unit and remove any packaging
  3. Open the side panel. You should see two filters wrapped in plastic. Remove the plastic wrapping on these two filters. Place unwrapped filters back into the unit. Repeat this step on the opposite side.
  4. Remove plug packaging and plug in the unit.
  5. Switch the unit on, located on the back of the unit near the plug.
  6. On the top of the unit, there is a black screen. Press the power button to turn on the unit.

This instructional video walks you through set-up:

How often should I run the purifier?

Keep the purifier on during building occupancy to clean the air and remove particles. It should not run overnight when unattended. During the day, if the purifier is too loud, lower the fan speed rather than turning the purifier off.

Which fan speed is recommended?

The purifier has 4 different fan speeds. You can change the fan speed by pressing the fan speed button   on the top black screen. In general, higher fan speeds provide more filtration by moving more air through the filters. Keep in mind that higher fan speeds also produce more sound, so you may need to adjust the fan speed based on classroom activities and noise levels.

  • For routine everyday filtration, we recommend speeds 1 or 2.
  • For nap time, we recommend speed 1, so the children have quiet and restful sleep.
  • For poor air quality days, we recommend speed 3 or 4. A more intense speed provides more cleaning power when the air quality is poor.

Where should I place my air purifier in the classroom?

The MA-1000 purifier is designed for large spaces. We recommend placing the air purifier away from the primary play area to minimize children disrupting the purifier and playing with the cord or filters. Place the purifier where air can move freely around it, with at least 6 inches of clearance from walls, furniture, curtains, and other objects. Keep the air intake and outlet unobstructed. Position the power cord where it will not create a tripping hazard or be accessible to children.

How often do I need to change the filter?

The replace filter light illuminates when it is time to replace the True HEPA H14 filter based on the hours the air purifier has been used and fan speed. Under normal usage conditions, the filters will typically last approximately 3,000 hours. This roughly equates to 18 weeks of continuous 24/7 use. Although Medify Air has discontinued the MA-1000, replacement filters are still available. Your program also received additional replacement filters as part of this donation.

How do I replace the filters?

When it’s time to replace filters, a “replace filter” light will illuminate on the black control panel screen.

Replace all filters at the same time.

Replace filters according to the following instructions:

  1. Make sure the unit is in a dry location on a smooth and flat surface.
  2. Unplug the air purifier.
  3. Open the filter doors on the left and right of the unit.
  4. Remove the used filters from the unit.
Install a new replacement filter by removing the exterior packaging of the filter sets and inserting a new filter with the white side facing out (tabs will be visible). Do not disassemble filters. Filter sets come in one piece for maximum efficiency.
  5. Align the tabs at the bottom of the filter grille covers with the unit. Gently push the grille covers until they snap back into place.
  6. Plug the power cord into a standard AC outlet. Press and hold the dimmer button for 3 seconds to reset the indicator.

Where can I purchase replacement filters?

With this Medify donation, you have received 9 additional filter sets, totaling 36 individual filters. All of the filters you received are made by Medify Air for this machine. You can purchase more Medify Air filters here. Replacement filters from other manufacturers may be available that are designed to fit the MA-1000. However, EHCC has not evaluated these products and cannot verify their fit, performance, filtration efficiency, or compatibility with the unit.

Is there a warranty for the MA-1000 purifier?

Yes, the MA-1000 is under warranty for 1 year, starting from the first day child care providers use the purifier. In the MA-1000 manual you will see language about a limited lifetime warranty. Due to the size of this donation, Medify Air is offering a 1 year warranty on the units you have received.

Please consult the MA-1000 manual for any trouble shooting and maintenance questions.

Please contact EHCC at 202-543-4033 for any questions regarding the donation.

How do the high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters work?

HEPA filters work by capturing airborne particles as air passes through the filter. According to Medify Air, the MA-1000’s True HEPA H14 filters capture 99.99% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns from the air that passes through the filters. HEPA filtration can help reduce airborne particles such as allergens, pollen, dust, pet dander, odor, and smoke from the air that passes through the filter.

What does the air purifier NOT do?

An air purifier is only one part of maintaining healthy indoor air. HEPA filters do not remove all gases or chemicals from the air.  An air purifier does not replace good ventilation practices, regular cleaning with safer choice cleaners and disinfectants, moisture or mold prevention, removing products that use fragrances, or other healthy indoor air practices.

How big is a micron?

A micron (also called a micrometer or µm) is a unit used to measure very small particles. One micron is one-thousandth of a millimeter, needless to say, far too small to see with the naked eye. A human hair is 50-70 µm in diameter.
