CEHN provides resources that illuminate how children’s environmental health is measured and tracked across multiple levels of jurisdictions, and we are building children’s environmental health profiles for all 50 states.
CEHN is also committed to educating our future leaders. We curate a searchable toolkit of age-appropriate books, lesson plans, and other resources for parents and educators to use to teach children preK-12+ about environmental health and climate change.
Our commitment to youth engagement and mentorship includes a robust internship program, a joint summer fellowship program with the National Center for Healthy Housing, and our annual Nsedu Obot Witherspoon (NOW) Youth Leadership Award for young people aged 10-21.
Child care professionals sign up for our Eco-Healthy Child Care® program’s Protecting Children’s Environmental Health E-Course to learn simple, low-cost tips for reducing environmental hazards in and around child care facilities. Protect children’s health and the health of staff from pesticides, lead, and harmful chemicals found in everyday cleaning products by eliminating exposures. The e-course is interactive and engaging, and the three-hour session is only $30. The Protecting Children’s Environmental Health e-course is available in English and Spanish on the ProSolutions website and is approved for adult learning clock hours.
Health professionals can take the Protecting Children’s Environmental Health e-course through Emory University School of Nursing’s online platform and receive continuing nursing education contact hours. The course is $30 to enroll and is available in English and Spanish.
CEHN also supports training for clinicians and other healthcare professionals. We got our start by training clinicians in Calirfornia in the 1990s and have grown from there. We were the first to publish Pediatric Environmental Health training resources for use in medical and nursing schools, and we currently support the Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU)’s Childhood Cancer and the Environment Program, which helps pediatric health care providers answer questions from parents and caregivers about environmental influences on childhood cancers.
Internships & Fellowships
CEHN helps to foster the next generation of environmental health leaders through our internship and fellowship learning opportunities. Each summer, fall, and spring, CEHN hosts interns who focus on Policy and Health Education, Marketing, Health Communications, and Design, and Eco-Healthy Child Care ®. CEHN also works with our partners at the National Center for Healthy Housing to offer an annual Children’s Environmental Health and Healthy Homes Fellowship.
CEHN hosts, collaborates, and serves as speakers for various keynote presentations, workshops, and webinars on children’s environmental health.
In addition to supporting community outreach and education through our resources and coordination roles, CEHN also provides direct community outreach and education in collaboration with partners. For instance, CEHN partnered with Homewood Children’s Village in Pittsburgh, PA, educating and driving action on renewable energy sources for children’s health and equity. As part of this effort, CEHN developed educational materials for general audiences about energy sources, children’s health, and equity, and the importance of moving towards clean, renewable energy sources. We also provided guest lectures to residents of Homewood and hosted a youth art contest to envision a healthy energy future.
We work with many partnerships and collaborations to improve children’s environmental health awareness, education, and training, including:
