Third-party product certification means that an independent organization, not the manufacturer or seller, has reviewed and verified a product to ensure it meets specific health, safety, or environmental standards. These certifications provide an added layer of certainty as the materials/ingredients used must meet stringent safety requirements in order to be marked as compliant.
For our catalog, we collected products that will be helpful in creating safer child care environments that also meet some form of third-party certification.
One example is ACMI-approved products, which carry the “AP” (Approved Product) Seal, confirming they are non-toxic and safe for use in early learning settings.
Additionally, we considered cleaning products that meet one or more of the following standards. Commercial cleaning products certified by Green Seal meet rigorous standards for performance, human health, and reduced environmental impact. The ECOLOGO® Certification Program by UL Solutions evaluates products across their entire lifecycle to ensure lower environmental harm. The EPA’s Safer Choice label helps consumers find products made with safer chemical ingredients, while still being effective. EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) label is used on disinfectants and antimicrobials that contain the least hazardous ingredients necessary for the job.
All products included in the catalog must also be fragrance and bleach-free, as these ingredients can pose health risks, particularly to children.

The application consists of a checklist of science-based, eco-healthy best practices in eleven content categories vital to protecting children from preventable environmental health hazards. To be endorsed, a child care facility must comply with at least 30 of 35 items on the eco-healthy check list. Additionally, one staff member from the child care facility must successfully complete the Protecting Children’s Environmental Health E-Course. Endorsement costs $25 or $50 (depending on the facility size). A $10 discount is offered for providers who renew before their current endorsement expires. EHCC endorsement lasts for two years. EHCC is the only national program working for over 17 years to deliver technical assistance, training, and resources to child care professionals on reducing environmental hazards within child care settings. The EHCC program’s goal is to identify common toxicants found within and around child care facilities (Head Start, Early Head Start, family child care, and center-based facilities) and reduce or all together prevent adverse health effects from exposures.
