Tell Congress To Act on Toxic Algal Outbreaks

TELL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO STOP TOXIC ALGAE AND PROTECT OUR FAMILIES

Toxic algal outbreaks, like the one that devastated Lake Pontchartrain, are a major threat to children’s health. Louisianan families are experiencing a toxic algae outbreak in Lake Pontchartrain.

These outbreaks expose children and others to carcinogenic toxins that become harmful if absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or swallowed, can cause asthma like symptoms and can even expose kids to carcinogenic toxins.

TOXIC ALGAE IS A THREAT TO OUR KIDS

While these outbreaks result from outdated water infrastructure and improper land management, they are also a clear sign of the harmful effects of climate change,

States like Louisiana lack adequate resources to upgrade their water infrastructure and protect their environment, businesses, and communities’ health.

We need our elected officials to recognize the public health threat that algae outbreaks pose and invest in real solutions to reduce the agricultural runoff that invades our waterways and puts families at risk. Read Letter to the Editor: Algal Outbreaks Are Harmful to Our Health for more information on the algal bloom issue in Louisiana.
